EMERRE & HATHAWAY POVERTY BAY
WOMEN'S ANNUAL OPEN GOLF TOURNAMENT
Report by Chris Taewa
Tess McDonald chips onto the 5th green.
Tessa McDonald had no time to celebrate her Poverty Bay Women’s Open victory on the Awapuni Links course yesterday.
Not long after she won the FA McFadyen-presented trophy as the division 1 (top 8) matchplay winner, McDonald was putting in her apologies for her absence from the prizegiving due to work commitments.
Apology was accepted. Organisers were happy enough to have such a quality player competing at the Emerre & Hathaway-sponsored two-day tournament featuring 58 players - 40 of those entering the matchplay competition held over five groups of eight.
McDonald was the top seed and red-hot favourite to collect her fourth McFadyen trophy - mother Karen McDonald having also won it in 2014 and 2017.
Long-time Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay representative Tessa lived up to her No 1 status with a 4 and 3 defeat of Omanu Golf Club member Debbie Noble in yesterday morning’s final.
McDonald looked set to wrap it up early at 5-up after eight holes and 2-under the card. To her credit, Noble fought gamely and a birdie on the ninth put her 4-down at the turn.
A couple of uncharacteristic mistakes by McDonald opened the door a little for Noble, but she soon slammed it shut for a comfortable victory.
McDonald cruised through day 1, beating Opotiki’s Sarndra Tiopira and Electrinet Park’s Karen Hay on the same hole - the 13th.
In other finals, Chrissie Courtman (Hamilton) beat Megan Allen (Poverty Bay) in the Sandown Trophy division 2; Maxine Francois (PB) beat Paula Kane (Royal Auckland and Grange) in the Awapuni Trophy division 3; Kirsty Shaw (PB) beat Viv Bell (PB) in the Waikanae Trophy division 4; and Rachel Young (Putaruru) beat Robyn Ngatai (Te Puia Hot Springs) in the Nick’s Head division 5.
Finalist Winners: Back row: Sue Talbot, Lee Steel, Jean Clayton, Pauline Zame, Maxine Francois. Front row: Kirsty Shaw, Chrissie Courtman, Rachel Young. Absent Tessa McDonald.
Top Left - Championship Finalists: Debbie Noble and Tessa McDonald with Consolation Finalists Karen McNeill and Lynne Holmberg
Top Right - Div 3 Finalists: Paula Kane and Maxine Francois with Div 2 Finalists: Chrissie Courtman and Megan Allen
Bottom - Line up of trundlers Tuesday morning

THANK YOU NOTE TO OUR ENTRANTS and RESULTS:
We hope that those who travelled got home safely and those that are still in our district enjoy the rest of your stay. On behalf of our Poverty Bay Golf Club Women’s Committee thank you all for coming to support our Emerre & Hathaway Poverty Bay Women’s Open Tournament. We hope you all enjoyed our two day event as much as we enjoyed hosting you all. I attach a full result list for you.
We would like to acknowledge our principal sponsors – Emerre & Hathaway Insurance for their continued support of our Open tournament. Other sponsors that helped make it a successful event were One Stop Golf Shop, Liquorland, Paper Plus, Mitre 10, Fenns Furniture, Jo Tietjen, Tony Field Jeweller, Kirsty Shaw, Debrac Boutique, Bunnings, Vetro, Resene, PaknSave. We thank all these sponsors for their support and hope our entrants, especially our PB members, will support them in return.
We were extremely lucky with the weather as there was lightening and thunder and heavy rain at the conclusion of our event. Sun is shining again today so we are hoping our Emerre & Hathaway Men’s Open tournament will have a good run of weather Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
We hope you all enjoyed our course, especially those that played it for the first time. We have a wonderful team who look after our course – our greenkeeping staff and their many volunteers. It is always looking and playing its best for our Women’s and Men’s Opens.
We hope that you will come back next year and bring some more players with you – our Women’s tournament is on the 22nd & 23rd September 2025.
Good golfing to everyone and we look forward to seeing you again
Anne
